Monet's "Haystacks" Sale Sets Impressionist Record of $110.7 Million

New York, 14 May, 2019 - Leading Sotheby’s Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale, Claude Monet’s 1891 painting, titled “Meules”, broke the sales record for the artist, and is the first Impressionist painting the exceed the $100 million mark at auction.

Considered one the the finest of the Haystack series Monet painted in the 1890’s, it is one of 8 Haystack paintings in private hands, with the other 17 residing in museums. Seven bidders vied against each other for eight minutes, driving the masterwork to its record-breaking auction price.
